Second Eggs, Gladly

Hurray, the chickens rewarded me with one egg this morning and a second egg this afternoon! I am fairly sure that one of they layers is Lucy, my lone Rhode Island Red. The eggs are a little small but from what I have read that is to be expected.

The eggs didn't last long, my daughter wanted to be the first one to try them so she had fried eggs for dinner (with yogurt and mandarin oranges of course). She said they tasted great, better than those old store eggs - we'll see.

The rest of us had homemade chicken pot pie. I made it as a special request for the Commander, he says he loves it.

One note on Honey, the house chicken. To stop her from getting lonely I turn the TV to the Malt Shop Oldies channel to give her something to listen to, I think she likes it - the Commander does.

  1. Congratulations on the eggs. We are having chicken and veggie pot pies as well. Great minds think alike!

  2. It is kind of silly that everyone is so excited about the eggs, but it is fun. The Commander is always asking for my pot pie, it is a great cold weather food - as you know!

  3. Does your chicken coop have any type of heat in it? I'm just wondering if Honey the house chicken is going to get too used to your warm house & have a hard time adjusting when she gets to join the others back in the coop. I know that a lot of animals can get respiratory issues from temp changes but not sure if it will affect a chicken. Maybe something to keep in mind??

  4. Those are beautiful eggs! I agree; the first eggs are always exciting. I think it's the beginning of a whole new enterprise or aspect of the farm.

I've never heard of the Malt Shop Oldies channel, but if it were here, I'm pretty sure I'd be watching it.

  5. Home grown eggs are not silly to be excited about! I gasped out loud when I found our very first one. YAY for beautiful shiny fresh brown eggs! :)

  7. Anonymous, We have thought about his and the plan was to transition Honey to the garage and then to the coop. We will bring one of the other hens to the garage to join her so she doesn't get lonely. Not sure if it will work but we will give it a try.

Faith, The Malt Shop Oldie channel only plays music - nothing to watch or I would be sitting in front of it all day too. I love the stars of yesterday and movies that rely on plots and scripts instead of special effects and nudity.

Jess, Thank you for stopping by and commenting. I really like your blog, it is so creative. I can't wait to have a fridge full of home grown eggs.

Nancy, It is like opening a gift box when I check the nest boxes - is a surprise inside?

  8. Eggcellent! And Honey has fully recovered I presume? Certainly well entertained - she'll love you for it, as the commander and the children do for your pie, etc, I'm sure

  10. Ahh, honey the house chicken get to listen to music! When we had a chicken inside (Danni) because she had a broken toe I turned on music for her, and she loved it. She also liked cartoons. She would sing with them. Chickens love music!

    Happy Thanksgiving!
